My wife, Shadra, and I run a branding & visibility business, and through that, we met and began working with Alexi LAWLESS, author of the newly-published Complicated Creatures, now available on Amazon.
Alexi is not only a kick in the pants to know but – and this is coming from an English teacher with a master’s degree in English Literature – a very good writer of fiction.
While there is a romantic element to the book, and it’s been classified as a romantic-suspense novel, I’m happy to admit that guys like a little romance too. Think of James Bond: Would his adventures really be as fun if there weren’t some very well-done female characters in the stories?
I have read most of the James Bond books and love Ian Fleming’s style. When I first started reading Complicated Creatures, one of the first things I wanted to know from Alexi was whether or not she was an Ian Fleming fan. Of course she is. Complicated Creatures is a well-written, fast-paced action adventure a la Ian Fleming, only with a much sexier (female) James Bond.
I asked Alexi a few off-the-wall questions about her book:
How did you come up with the title of your book?
My plan was to write a simple love story, but that became much more complicated when I took the governor off the engine and let the story flow. The characters’ individual personalities, unique foibles and the quandaries they were working through both within themselves and with each other created a sui generis story that overreached the original plotline.
I went from two main characters to three (you have to read the book to meet the third) and a couple major supporting characters to two separate families, a team of men from Special Forces from all over the world and a couple of nemeses who’d make the watchlists of any number of governments. If those aren’t Complicated Creatures, then I don’t know what is.
Do you have any unique talents or hobbies?
Travel. Reading. Drinking. And I Write… constantly. I’m also a multi-tasker (what woman isn’t?), so there’s also Reading while Drinking. Writing while Traveling. Sadly, the Drinking while Writing is rarely productive for me, so I had to put a curb to that.
What kind(s) of writing do you do?
My first love is poetry. Discovering Sandra Cisneros’s My Wicked, Wicked Ways and Loose Woman changed my life. I saw in an instant how vivid and gorgeous writing could be in a really spare, lyrical way. I also have an on-going love affair with Frank O’Hara. Meditations in an Emergency is a staple I think everyone should read.
My editor thinks I should write more heavily in the Action/Suspense genres next… perhaps a female Tom Clancy or Lee Child? I’d be interested to know what your readers think.
What inspires you?
Music. Can’t write without it. No matter where I am in the world, I can turn something on and slip into the mood of what I need to get onto paper. If you’d like to hear my playlists, you can find them here. I’m also always open to new recommendations, so definitely feel free to shoot some new groups/songs my way!

Corporate Runaway. Novelist. Wanderer. Bourbon Drinker.
Alexi LAWLESS has been a closeted writer for thirty-odd years—from way back when she was banging out stories on a Commodore 64 to her years writing the corporate strategies for some of the largest companies in the world. But it was two years ago, laid up after foot surgery, that she started to seriously consider whether it was time to come out as the novelist she’d always wanted to be.
Armed with a laptop and an around-the-world ticket, she quit the corporate scene and set out to see if her passion for writing was more than a pipe-dream. Less than a year later, Alexi’s debuting her first published novel, Complicated Creatures: Part One, with the second book due out this summer. And while you may catch her sipping a drink in Miami Beach, you’re more likely to find her indulging her nomadic tendencies somewhere in Latin America or Southeast Asia.
